Religious Accommodation in Ontario Schools

This project seeks to support and promote Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy and in particular, responding to Religious Accommodation. The Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy includes the need for each school board to ‘have religious accommodation guidelines in place and communicate these guidelines to the community.’

The CMF has developed a toolkit of promising practices to assist boards and schools in supporting religious accommodation requests. This toolkit will be used as the basis for training and will be adapted and translated into French.

School boards will work with multi-faith regional committees (RMC’s) to address various issues. This training would further assist in building positive partnerships and complements the toolkit of promising practices.

This project will assist school boards to be actively involved with students who require religious accommodation and to share resources that will help boards to better serve students with religious accommodation needs,

The CMF will deliver training to educators and assist boards in reviewing the process to provide religious accommodation, and identify community resources to support religious accommodation issues in boards/schools.

Objectives

The goal of the project is to enable school boards across Ontario to more adequately provide religious accommodation for students and staff and to better understand their needs.

Planned Activity

Ontario’s Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy is the foundation of this project which aims to positively impact on the Province’s three core priorities of; high levels of student achievement; reduced gaps in student achievement; and increased public confidence in publicly funded education

The CMF will work with school boards, administrators and diversity/equity staff to:

  • Use the CMF’s toolkit of promising practices to deliver training to educators that will build on existing tools for Religious Accommodation in schools;
  • Assist school boards in the refinement of their Religious Accommodation guidelines;
  • Identify community resources in responding to Religious Accommodation, and
  • Adapt and translate the toolkit into French

The toolkit will be piloted across Ontario’s six English Networks. School boards in the Networks will work with the CMF’s Regional Multifaith Committee’s, which have been helpful to address various issues. This training would further assist in building positive partnerships and complements the toolkit of promising practices.
